BOATS.COM YJA YOUNG SAILOR OF THE YEAR 2015
Topper sailor Eleanor Poole has won the Boats.com YJA Young sailor of the Year. Eleanor Poole, from Dunsford in Devon, impressed members of the YJA, by garnering a string of firsts to win the 2015 Topper National championships at the age of 14, as well as securing an impressive seventh at the 2015 Topper World Championship on Lake Garda, Italy.
The Young Sailor of the Year Award was first awarded in 1993 and recognises endeavour and achievement by Britain’s upcoming young sailors. It is a very prestigious award and is just reward for the amazing success achieved by the young sailor. Past winners of the Young Sailor of the Year Award have gone on to achieve success at the highest level of yachting, including Dame Ellen MacArthur and Sir Ben Ainslie.
Eleanor commented: “It feels fabulous to win the award, just incredible. I wasn’t the favourite to win the nationals but as the event went on I got better and better and it all came together in the end. I love being out on the water and I find the competitive element of sailing very exciting – especially on the start line of a race.”
At the same ceremony, Volvo Ocean Race winning skipper, Ian Walker was named boats.com YJA Yachtsman of the Year.
Ian Walker joins an illustrious list of former winners, including Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Dame Ellen MacArthur, Sir Ben Ainslie, Tracy Edwards MBE, Keith Musto MBE and Rodney Pattisson MBE, to name but a few. The Yachtsman of the Year is regarded by many as “the knighthood of yachting”.
